Yemin Moshe was one of the very first Jewish neighborhoods to be built outside of the Old City’s walls. The neighborhood was built betweenand was financed by the famed Jewish benefactor Moses Montefiore,after whom the neighborhood is named. The original purpose of building Yemin Moshe was to alleviate the crowding and unsanitary conditions with the Jewish neighborhoods in the Old City. The land was originally purchased by Montefiore from the estate of Judah Touro in 1855 and it’s first housing project was called Mishkenot Sha’ananim and was completed inIt consisted of 28 apartments,each 1 and ½ rooms!
