Pentrich Retreat is a 3 bedroom family home on the slopes of St James, Cape Town. You can feel the authentic heritage of the area in this home, while soaking in the stunning views of the Indian Ocean. There is a large living room with a dining area, seating area and wood burning fireplace. Next to the living area is a Tv room with a selection of Dstv and an extensive library of books. The kitchen has all the facilities you need for a comfortable holiday, including a dishwasher and a large pantry for your groceries. The laundry has a washing machine and tumble dryer and is situated under the house.
There are two bedrooms downstairs. The first has a double bed and built in cupboards, and the second has twin beds, which can be pushed together to create a King size bed. This room also has a work area, built in cupboards and beautiful views. The two downstairs bedrooms share a large bathroom which has a shower over the bath. Enjoy stunning views while brushing your teeth!
Up the winding wooden staircase is the Master Bedroom. This bedroom is very large and boasts a window seat that is ideal for reading while enjoying the views. The bedroom also has a dressing table, en-suite bathroom with a shower and a double bed. A sliding door opens up onto a large wooden deck, with outdoor furniture, allowing you to sit and soak up the beauty of the natural surroundings, mountain and sea views, whilst eating or simply relaxing.
This family home is geared for kids, with a trampoline in the garden and being in walking distance to the beach. There is Wifi throughout. Please note, a cat lives here.
Just a little further on from Cape Town’s well-known Muizenberg beach is St James. Home to a cluster of well-known and oft-photographed bathing boxes on the beach, St James is a picturesque area that offers beachgoers respite from the westerly wind.
St James is one of Cape Town’s smaller suburbs, yet it has a rich history. Thanks to a publication put together by St James historian, Michael Walker, the history of some of the original homesteads built between Muizenberg and St James in 1883 has been recorded.
From St James towards Muizenberg, a number of gracious stone houses still remain as testament to a wealthy colonial past when the main road was commonly known as “millionaire’s Mile”.
During the late 19th century, homes were constructed from stone, plaster and limestone, and sported thatched roofs. Some of these homes have been handed down from generation to generation and still exist today, giving visitors a glimpse of what St James looked like in its heyday. One such structure is St James Cottage, built inAccording to historical accounts, the owner, Abraham Auret, hid prisoners of war in the loft during the Anglo-boer War, and helped to stage their escape across the bay.
Today St James offers the visitor a relaxing spot in which to unwind and enjoy the intimate beach and rock pools along the False Bay coastline. There’s also a safe tidal pool and a tennis court for the more energetic. This beach is ideal for families as the pool is warmer than the surrounding sea.
When you tire of the beach, don your walking shoes and take a stroll along the pathway that links St James with Surfers’ Corner in Muizenberg.
Just next to St James, is Kalk Bay. Part-sleepy fishing village and part-buzzy high street, Kalk Bay’s eclectic mix of people, historic buildings, cobbled streets, bohemian bric-a-brac shops, vintage bookstores, art and antique galleries, colourful fishing vessels and excellent restaurants is what makes it so unique and charming. Kalk Bay is a fishing village on the coast of False Bay, South Africa and is now a suburb of greater Cape Town. It lies between the ocean and sharply rising mountainous heights that are buttressed by crags of grey Table Mountain Sandstone. A gem on the False Bay coastline, Kalk Bay is known for its raw beauty, interesting shops, vast selection of restaurants and stunning views. You could easily spend a full day in this little neighbourhood and still not be able to experience it all!
