The Neighborhood:
The region of Lisboa e Vale do Tejo is particularly suitable for getting to know the Portuguese and their cozy way of life. Although there is still very little tourism, the country is relatively densely populated. There are many small original villages and some larger district towns, where the Portuguese everyday life goes its way. In summer, the Portuguese from the bigger cities like to spend their holidays with their families in this region, as here, everything is still as it pleases them.
Those who are interested in the Portuguese culture and history will get their money's worth here. There is a lot to discover: medieval villages and monasteries that are on the list of world cultural assets; castles, stone witnesses that tell about their foundation by the Knights Templar; the legendary Christ Monastery and finally Fátima, one of the most important places of pilgrimage worldwide. The interesting caves in the mountains and the footprints of their first visitors - the dinosaurs - date back to much earlier times.
In the immediate vicinity of Lourinha is Praia da Areia Branca, a typical Portuguese bathing and surfing resort.
Fortunately, there are very few hotels or holiday resorts here, but there is still a lot going on on the beach in August, as many Portuguese from the surrounding area come for a swim. There is a lifeguard looking to the right and hundreds of typical beach tents that can be rented for a small fee. Those who want to escape from this hustle and bustle only need to walk one or two bays along the beach and already they have a bay for themselves again. In Praia da Areia Branca there is a nice beach promenade with many small cafés and good restaurants.
Portugal has the best conditions for surfing in Europe and with its countless surf spots offers a lot of waves for every surfer. The beaches around Peniche are considered the best surfing area in Europe. The waves of the legendary surf spots "Supertubos" and "Baleal" are ridden by surfers from all over the world. In autumn 2017 the "Rip Curl Pro Portugal" will take place here for the ninth time. Meanwhile there are many different surf schools and surf camps in the direct surroundings of Peniche.
A special highlight is the newly opened largest outdoor museum: Dinoparque Lourinhã nearby. From the bus station Lourinha, in 10 min to foot to reach, you come nearly hourly with the express bus Lisboa Peniche into 65 km distant Lisbon.
