THE LOCALS GUIDE TO LEURA

Ollie and I love to eat at Cafe Bon Ton, Leura Garage, Zest, Vesta, the Yellow Deli and Petalura. The first three are located in Leura Mall which is a short walk from the Cottage or a 2 minute drive if you prefer. The Yellow Deli http://yellowdeli.com/katoomba is located in Katoomba (note it is closed on Saturdays), and Petalura is in Mt Wilson http://www.petalura.com.au/.

If you are visiting in September, October or November and headed to Blackheath, be sure to check out the Campbell Rhododendron Gardens (http://rhodogarden.org.au/?page_id=13) and have a lunch at Vesta http://vestablackheath.com.au/).

Blackheath is also home to Ollie’s favourite walking track – the Grand Canyon Track (http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/walking-tracks/grand-canyon-track). This walk is amazing but you will encounter many stairs and a long climb back up the escarpment. For a more leisurely walk with breathtaking views, you should consider the walk from Govetts Leap to Pulpit Rock (http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/walking-tracks/pulpit-walking-track).

For a more casual lunch option we love the Laughing Elephant in Wentworth Falls for good pho, Vietnamese pork rolls (banh mi) and fresh rice paper spring rolls (they also have a great selection of Asian cooking ingredients). Please note that the Laughing Elephant is only open from 9:30am - 3:30pm on Saturdays and 10am - 2:30pm on Sundays and public holidays. During the week they are open from 9am to 5pm.

A great option is to go for a hike in Wentworth Falls (the Charles Darwin Walk (http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/walking-tracks/charles-darwin-walk) or the National Pass (https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/walking-tracks/national-pass) are lovely walking tracks, each only 1.5 hrs) and go for lunch at the Laughing Elephant afterwards. The Conversation Hut is also a good option for lunch.

You could also consider a trip to Mt Tomah Botanical Gardens which is about a 40 minute drive from the house. There is a lovely restaurant in the gardens which has stunning views and we've had a few long lunches there followed by a walk in the gardens. There is also a more casual kiosk for tea and coffee as well.

Otherwise, afternoon tea at Lillianfels or Leura Everglades is pretty wonderful (make sure you book). You could also consider a spa afternoon at Lillianfels and have afternoon tea in their amazing lounge afterwards. I did this for my 30th birthday last year and it was really special.

The Hydro Majestic opened recently and has been refurbished. We've not tried the high tea (which does have mixed reviews) but we have eaten at the outdoor restaurant (the Boiler House cafe) which had great pizzas and amazing views as it is right on the edge of the escarpment in Medlow Bath http://www.hydromajestic.com.au/.

There are some amazing walks right across the road from the Cottage, if you are feeling energetic you can head to the valley floor and walk up the giant staircase. The giant staircase winds its way up one of the 3 sisters and at the top you can cross a small (very scary) bridge and stand on one of the sisters). If you are going to walk up the staircase, we recommend parking a car close to the top, because it is at least another hour to get home. This walk is not one for the faint hearted!

We have a book on the various walks at the house or if like Ollie can recommend some for you!

You can catch a movie at The Edge Cinema in Katoomba or rent one at the DVD vending machine in the Woolworths building in Leura mall and relax by the fire in the Cottage. We also have a large range of DVDs in the cottage.

If you need supplies for your weekend, Leura Woolworths is open until 10pm and there is also a small bottle shop next door (although we do prefer Leura Cellars in the Mall who have an amazing range but they are only open until 8pm). We also really like antiquing in Blackheath at the Victory Theatre Antique Centre and having a browse at Cabin and Cove also in Blackheath.

Also you must, must check out Josephans chocolates in the Mall, best chocolate ever! Whilst Ollie prefers the Coconut Rough, I highly recommend the chocolate honeycomb (in the interest of science, we have conducted a lot of research on the various chocolates available at Josephans!).

Tips for Kids:

1. Charles Darwin Walk in Wentworth Falls http://www.wildwalks.com/bushwalking-and-hiking-in-nsw/blue-mountains-wentworth-falls/charles-darwin-walk.html

It is quite easy going (about a 5km return trip) and lots of places to stop along the way. There is also a great place to eat at the track called the Conservation Hut http://www.conservationhut.com.au/ or you can head to Wentworth Falls village where there are a few good places to eat (my favourite is the Laughing Elephant which is mentioned above).

2. Prince Henry Cliff Walk - this is a relatively easy one, you can park at Scenic World and do the walk and even take the skyway back if your kids get tired.

http://www.scenicworld.com.au/explore-our-world/our-environment/tracks-and-walks/

Also, across the road from the cottage there is the Olympian Lookout which is beautiful and you can walk all the way to the three sisters (or just turnaround when the kids get tired).

There is also a small park at the end of Olympian Parade if you turn left when you leave the Cottage and follow the road all the way to the end. Its a pretty easy walk and has a playground and BBQ facilities.

The trolley bus tour which stops near our house at the Toy and Railway Museum http://www.trolleytours.com.au/trolley-tour-ride is a fun way to see Leura and the surrounding suburbs. You can also check out the Toy and Railway Museum, our friend's six year old loved this place. It is a two minute walk from the cottage, super close and you can't miss it, just turn left once you leave the cottage, cross Leura Mall and it is a few houses along Olympian Parade. http://www.toyandrailwaymuseum.com.au/

A friend of mine took her kids apple picking at Logan Brae Apple Farm which is in Blackheath (just a short drive from Leura) and they loved it. http://loganbrae.com.au/?page_id=124

Mt Tomah Botanical Garden is also a good option with kids. They have a small cafe plus a fancier restaurant (which had great food) and the gardens are lovely and would be great for your kids to run around in. Mt Tomah's about a 40 minute drive from Leura.

The lake at Wentworth Falls is a great option, make sure to take some bread so that you can feed the ducks and there is BBQ facilities, picnic table and a play area. In warmer weather you can also swim in the lake.

Jellybean pool (Bondi of the Blue Mountains) is also a good option if it starts to heat up. The pool is in Glenbrook which is a half hour down the mountain tucked away in the national park (http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/walking-tracks/jellybean-track). Closer to home is Minihaha falls (http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/walking-tracks/jellybean-trackwww.bluemts.com.au/news/how-to-find-minnehaha-falls/). Note: Minihaha should not be undertaken with small children.

Finally, of the restaurants we've already mentioned, we wanted to highlight the kid friendly ones (for young children and babies). Leura Garage is very kid friendly and they have a decent kids’ menu as well as highchairs. The Yellow Deli in Katoomba is also kid friendly and quite an "interesting" cafe, you'll see what we mean if you go. Unique Patisserie in Katoomba is also a good option, despite the name it serves pretty good Malaysian food.

We have undercover parking and there is a plenty of street parking available on Olympian Parade if needed.
