Elegant holiday apartment in the heart of the splendid Trieste, benefiting from a central position which allows guests to easily reach its most renowned landmarks. Ideal location to enjoy a holiday at the seaside, amidst enchanting beaches and white cliffs, or to set off on tours to discover this fascinating territory, which offers castles by the sea, pristine areas and nature trails in the backcountry. The charming town of Trieste, capital of the Region, is today a cosmopolitan city with a glorious past deeply connected to the Austro-Hungarian Empire; thanks to its strategic location overlooking the sea in the Gulf of Trieste, it has been for centuries, and up to 1918, the main harbour of the Empire, thus inheriting the title "Small Vienna by the sea". You can admire majestic palaces from different ages, such as neo-classical architecture, art nouveau, baroque or eclectic style merging with Roman remains, buildings of the eighteenth century and of the Hapsburg era. The town lies at the foot of an promontory that comes down abruptly from the Karst Plateau towards the sea, showing off its peculiar colours, pristine nature and caves as well as deep-rooted traditions and gastronomic heritage. The apartment is located in the "Cavana" district, at 100 m from the main square of the town "Piazza dell'Unità", Italy's largest seafront square and Trieste's symbol, and from Piazza della Borsa, its commercial heart. In close proximity to these squares lies the Opera House "Giuseppe Verdi", with a lively schedule. You can visit on foot the crooked streets of the "Città Vecchia", an extensive old city with typical Medieval houses and lots of restaurants and shops, and reach the top of San Giusto hill with its Castle, another town symbol, and the ancient Cathedral. Don't miss the chance to visit two splendid landmarks just outside the town, located on a cliff by the sea, with wonderful panoramic view over the Gulf of Trieste; we are referring to the Miramare and Duino Castles, both boasting breathtaking views and a luxurious park wrapping up its visitors in intense colours and fragrances. Miramare Castle stands on the peak of the rocky promontory of Grignano in the Gulf of Trieste, at about 10 km from the city. Composed of over 20 rooms, it was commissioned in the second half of the 19th century by the Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Hapsburg as a noble residence for himself and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium. The Archduke, younger brother of the Emperor Franz Joseph I, supposedly discovered this cove after he took shelter here during a sudden storm in the Gulf. The astonishing complex is realized as a Medieval fortress with a strong Romantic influence. The castle is surrounded by a flourishing park full of precious botanic species, stretching over 22 hectares on grounds degrading towards the sea, featuring an English and an Italian garden, sculptures and lakes. Duino Castle is located in the municipality of Duino-Aurisina, at approx. 10 Km from Trieste. It was built in 1300 upon the ruins of an ancient Roman outpost and it was owned by the Princes of Torre and Tasso (Thurn und Taxis). Over the centuries many illustrious people stayed here, including Empress Elisabeth of Austria (known as Sissi) and the poet R.M. Rilke, to whom was dedicated the "Rilke trail", a 2Km panoramic promenade rising high on the cliff between Duino and the bay of Sistiana and offering wonderful views over the Duino Regional Nature Reserve. Other than the castle and the park, the Duino complex allows visitors to see a World War II bunker built in 1943 by the German Kriegsmarine. Distances: the border with Slovenia is located at only 15 Km, Venice 160 Km, Udine 90 Km. Fee-paying parking place on the street or fee-paying underground carpark open 24/7 at only 300 m. Apartment on the second floor of a historical renovated building, with lift; it overlooks the historical streets of the neighborhood. Pedestrian-only access for 30 m. IFT002 and IFT003 are located in the same building.
