No.39 Galle Fort, an atmospheric three-bedroom Dutch colonial townhouse, sits at the heart of Galle's magnificent 17th century colonial fortress, on Sri Lanka's south-western coast. Redolent of the colonial era, the villa's capacious size, graceful period features and striking custom-made furnishings paint a picture of the past whilst its well-appointed bedrooms, comfortable lounges and modern facilities lavish it with every essential mod con. Ideal for families and groups of friends looking to stay right in the heart of this historic site, this staffed heritage house is mere footsteps away from the fort's landmarks, eateries and boutiques.About Location:No. 39 Galle Fort is located along historic Lighthouse Street.  As a temporary resident of Galle Fort, you will join the glittering ranks of merchants, traders, colonialists and foreign nationals who have all left their indelible mark on this impressive seventeenth century Dutch fortress.  Listen from your window for the call to prayer from the mosque or the chanting from the Buddhist temple; Galle Fort is home to temples of three religions whose devotees all live in peace and harmony with each other. The fort is a wonderful place to explore as you wander narrow streets and ponder at the colonial architecture; delicate fretwork, magnificent columns and never-ending red-tiled roofs.  The wide grassy western ramparts – where cricket match regularly break out – offer the perfect respite at sunset.  There are also a couple of interesting museums showcasing the fort's rich history as well as plenty of boutiques selling handicrafts, delicate lacework, glittering gems and other evocative souvenirs. Restaurants and cafés for coffee-stops abound. The fort has a couple of swimming beaches but as these have few facilities people tend to head to beaches such as Dalawella (where the Wijeya Beach Restaurant is a favourite), busy Unawatuna and, further east, to Talpe (WB and Talpe Beach Club are lovely) for quieter, wider swathes of sand.  The Lighthouse Hotel and Spa, 4km west of Galle, has two swimming pools and non-guests can spend the day there for a small fee.  Activities in the local area include inland bicycle rides, whale and dolphin watching cruises and scuba diving.
