The Space:
In the gardens, our purpose is is to provide visitors with a serene, relaxing and beautiful backdrop for their vacation. Jamaica is many things to many people... however, it represents the beauty of nature to everybody that is why we first turned to the gardens which have been completely replanted and relandscaped.
They look lovely now.
The house is an older house, built in the eighties,
and one with a lot of history and charm that
we are gradually modernizing, between visitors.
This is what we have been trying to do in Avalon.
The property has a housekeeper who is there
to guide and assist the guests as needed and to look after the public areas. She can also offer general advice and assistance.
Avalon is located a 5-minute walk from the main road, and a shopping plaza with restaurants and groceries and a chemist.

TRANSFERS ARE NOW AVAILABLE!
Transfers from the Montego Bay airport to the property is now available as below:
1. Minimum fee $100.00 USD.
2. The maximum person is 4.

Transfers, are offered from the Kingston airport including the toll fee to the property and the terms are as stated below:
1. Minimum charge $200.00 USD.
2. Or $55.00 USD per person subject to a maximum of 4 persons.

It is also close to a major highway where taxis are readily available. However, in my view, renting a car would be a good option. It would significantly enhance your ability to gain familiarity with our Central and Eastern North Coast with its many charms and attractions.

HISTORY OF AVALON
The ride that takes you there from Ocho Rios is a pretty one.
You leave Ocho Rios, and you head East. In a little while, the traffic eases, and in about 10 minutes, you find yourself at the point where the Pompano Bay Commercial Complex is on your right.

You, however, turn left and into the community of Jamaica Beach.
This is an elegant and affluent area...one of the best in St. Mary.
The houses there are all substantial properties, all standing on big lots. Most have elegant structures on them. Most are well landscaped and well maintained.
However... some are neglected!

This was the situation with Lot 81, Bayswater drive.
It looked neglected...
When I first saw the house that we were later to call Avalon, it looked sad.
I am not a fanciful person, and neither do I usually attribute human emotions to houses!
Yet, that is what I felt as I stood there, staring at it.
The generous lawns that encircled the house were burnt away by heat and lack of water. The swimming pool was silent, and the elderly trees looked tired.
They were essentially fruitless.

Yet, in spite of all this...it was a lovely place!
Its lines were clean and open. The pool was substantial, and there was a handsome patio. This patio then led to the large living area inside, which then took you to a good sized kitchen. Nestled in there were four bedrooms, elegant and quite private, they were also generous and well windowed.
Windows that could have well looked at lovely gardens, but there were none at the time.
I listened for birdsong but there was little or none.
It was strange.
It made me think of lines by Edna St. Vincent Millay.

“Thus, in the winter, stands the lonely tree,
Nor knows what birds have vanished, one by one,
Yet knows it’s boughs, more silent than before:

I cannot say what loves have come and gone,
I only know that summer sang in me
a little while that in me sings no more."

I was deeply attracted to this property.
I felt it had just the challenge I needed.
I wanted to change this sad place into a happy one.
I wanted to fill it again, with birds and flowers and butterflies.
And to have, once again, the sounds of the laughter of children,
and of their footfall on the grass.

So, that is what we have tried to do here... and to an extent, we have succeeded. In this brief time, we have had several guests and many with kids. They all seemed to have enjoyed themselves.
And we are continuing our efforts to bring this place back to the enormous charm it must have once had.
Are we succeeding? We think so. Our best advisors are our guests, and they seem to like what we have done so far, and with their guidance and support, we shall continue the task.
Hopefully, we will get there soon!
Guest Access:
the guests are of course entitled to the exclusive use of their rooms.
The internal and external entertainment areas are also available to them for their relaxation
and excercise.
There is the main garden, quite large and well lit.
there are many Jamaican trees and flowers bearing
examples of local fruit and flora.
There is the pool area. It is a good sized pool and attached to the house via a patio that leads directly from the Living Room.
Then, there is the back garden.
That is where we have our aviary, and there is also a fountain and a bench with table where
people can eat drink and enjoy the atmosphere.
Interaction with Guests:
The business has designated staff to run it ...
so I may not be directly involved....
But since I live in Ocho Rios.. I may well be
around as well.
In any event.. all reasonable guest problems will be addressed.. whether by me, or by another member of The CCI family.
The Neighborhood:
It is a good decent community..
located near the sea coast and containing many substantial houses.... all of them on lots of 1/2 acre or more.
The neighbors tend to be friendly... but discrete. they will smile politely at you ... but not hunt you down with friendly overtures.
That is often a blessing.....
Getting Around:
If you need to be collected from the Airport.. this is a service we can provide at a price of US$1.00 per kilometer.
Once here, taxis, heading east or west
are very easy to get from the main road,
which is 5 minutes away.
So... you do not really need a car....
But.. it is an ideal location to have a car.
inside parking, good roads, right in the middle of attractions... so a car would be good to have.
It is all about... and what you want to do..
and what your budget is like....
Other Things to Note:
PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS NO LIFEGUARD ON DUTY! TAKE DUE PRECAUTION ESPECIALLY FOR KIDS!
We intend to develop this property as a venue for various family
occasions, such as weddings, reunions, cocktail parties, Bar Mitzvahs etc.
We believe that with it's generous gardens, and evident beauty
all around you, this would be an excellent location for a
family celebration.
We are willing to assist you in organizing such a function.
Just ask us about it.

Please note that this listing does not come with any form of a meal plan and also that the host is not required to supply groceries to the guest.

Electricity is a huge expense in this big old house. We have routinely received bills exceeding US$1000.00 a month. We are "begging" our guests to have some pity on us!! It is especially galling to see all the air conditioners on full blast, and the guests are not even present in the property.
Please be informed that, in such a case, we will turn off the A/C s ourselves.

We have a dog, as a security factor. His name is Mopsy, and he is a good-natured animal who has never yet shown any hostile behaviour towards family or visitors.
He is, in fact, a well behaved, and well-loved family pet.
You may also find a lot of birds hanging around the place.
This is the unavoidable consequence of feeding them regularly...
which I confess I always do.
So... prepare to be confronted by a bunch
of Barbary and other doves.
We also plan to develop a Caribbean garden with many types and colors of plants represented.
The initial cleaning that we provide our guests is charged for as part of the original booking.
New cleanings are very easy to arrange!
All you have to do is ask for a fresh cleaning and one will be provided at the same cost as the first.
