The juxtaposition of dull stone and sparkling glass, brings a sense of completeness to Khanabadosh, Mashobra. Attired in a modern demeanour, this place has its soul deeply rooted in tradition. Aware and concerned about the water situation in Shimla region, Khanabadosh is committed to rain water harvesting. My constant endeavour, to be completely independent of the municipal water supply, borders on funny. For the moment, the bathrooms and the plants consume harvested water. I’ve also begun to take baby steps in the direction of tapping solar power. Steps, that reduce my carbon footprint as much as possible. Talking of green, plants at Khanabadosh are as well fed as my guests and their pets. To do that I’ve got a thriving worm-compost pit going. You could pitch in and simply segregate waste generated by you as requested and feel good that, the almost-hurtful-to-the-eye-green of the plants at Khanabadosh, is partly because of you. Eco-conscious visitors to Khanabadosh shall be pestered for more ideas.
Khanabadosh has 4 rooms for guests, I stay in the 5th. In addition there is a sprawling living room and a spacious kitchen. This aside, there’s a largish, beautiful green piece of land, running along on one side of the property. A giant Buddha in stone, overlooks this green patch…almost beckoning you to get the Yoga mat out (yes, we have Yoga mats)…or just sit, meditate or sleep in the strategically placed deck chairs. There’s a courtyard too. Excellent to sit late in the evenings…by the fire cauldron (yes, we have that too) cradling embers with dancing flames atop. A perfect setting, in Paul McCartney’s words, to “take a sip, see the world through a glass and speculate about the cosmic solution.”

Room Details
1. The Kings Bedroom at Khanabadosh. Perched highest on the 2nd floor, this is a room with character. It has large windows in the shape of an inverted V, wood paneled ceiling running in synch with the jagged slopes of the roof-top and a portion of the ceiling composed of an almost transparent composite sheet, that invites you to star-gaze, catch the sun or sit under a lashing downpour, warm with coffee …a book at hand. It’s also the largest room, with an antique 200 year old 4-post king size bed. There’s also a diwan in a cosy nook, which doubles as a bed. The windows offer you a view of the mountains afar, the President’s retreat above, a series of spectacular sun-sets…all in the dramatic back-drop of the ever so often mist that lends an exotic texture to the world outside. The attached bathroom has a shower with hot and cold water.
2. Farm View at Khanabadosh. Nestled on the 1st floor, Parvati Valley has a double bed to sleep. There’s also a sofa. The attached bathroom, for want of better words…bathes in luxury—a Jacuzzi in place. There’s also a balcony with the room. A couple of local chairs, a coffee table and a flower-basket make an idyllic setting to sit here, overlooking the village.
3. Cosy Room at Khanabadosh. Also on the 1st floor, Thanedar has a double bed. The attached bathroom has a shower with hot and cold water. The view from the window allows you a peek into the vibrant village life below and beyond.
4. Room with a view at Khanabadosh. This one on the 1st floor too, also sleeps two. There’s a coffee table and a couple of chairs. The attached bathroom has a shower with hot and cold water. The balcony with the room has a sitting of 2 rural chairs with a table and a flower-basket. This room overlooks the green patch along the house. You also get to watch over the Buddha. The view is beautiful…the sun-sets magical.
5. The Library. This by the way is also where I stay…if not physically, then in spirit. Loads of books here…a smorgasbord of themes. I love to read. If you do too, you won’t be disappointed.
Kitchen
The hearth at Khanabadosh is as warm as its heart. Breakfast is included in the tariff. We have an in-house cook for regular meals. But you are more than welcome to pitch in or cook completely solo. I cook too. And on prior intimation, I could serve you with authentic Himachali and/ or Kashmiri cuisine. And of course, the tandoor at Khanabadosh always looks forward to lure your palate.
And oh! Then there’s “The Secret”. For those who wake up in the dead of the night, hungry. Each day at Khanabadosh, I’d organize a complete meal/ snack and conceal it in someplace accessible. Its location and the fare will change with each sunset. Make sure, you find out what’s on and where. For in the mountains, nightly hunger pangs aren’t uncommon. I’m sure you’d send a prayer my way each time you unravel ‘the secret’.

House Rules

Loud Music not allowed. It’s a home. Not a jail. And yet…it’s a home. Please stay like you’d stay at yours…mindful of the sensitivities of other guests and your host. Adhering to the checkout time will be of great help to me, especially if I have a reservation for the same room that day. However, if there’s no such urgency…the timings will be relaxed, without your saying so. You won’t find any ‘No-Smoking’ signs at Khanabadosh. As you alone, are in of your lungs. So light up, if you must…just don’t light us up. As mentioned, we are a green-loving joint. Please join us in our endeavour to save electricity, recycle water and produce compost. You’ll find duly colour-coded waste receptacles all over Khanabadosh. Please help me in keeping the waste suitably segregated. Incidentally, did you know that it isn’t just the kitchen/ vegetable waste that goes into a compost pit. Cardboard, newspaper, clean paper; coffee grounds & filters, corncobs, eggshells and nut-shells; cotton and wool rags, dryer and vacuum lint; flowers, leaves, plants, pine needles, vegetables and fruits; sawdust, wood chips, grass and yard trimmings; teabags; hay and straw; AND even hair and fur are merry compostables. So now you know…please abide/ take a pledge and oblige.

Ever wondered how it is to live a life you always wanted. I kept liking posts on Facebook showing a cottage with a tag line "who wants to spend the rest of your life here". Well, to sum it all up, this is the place to be. Quite and peaceful with lush green surroundings and plenty of time to yourself. The staff keeps you engaged with their stories and other things you can experience around the place. They are very courteous and always ready to help. I had an exceptional family vacation here. The place is new and amazingly located and furnished. the interiors speak for themselves and so does everything in the property. It did take some time to reach there (I was traveling from Dubai) - but it was well worth the wait. Best Wishes to the staff and owner of this amazing beauty.
