This enchanting two-bedroom flat, located within the walls of a quaint fortress town dating back to the year 1202, was featured in an architectural design magazine. Situated on the second floor (top floor) of an ancient palazzo in the heart of the Chianti wine region, midway between Florence and Siena (30 minutes by car to either) is this completely renovated property. The owners, an American and Florentine, were faithful in preserving this apartment's medieval charm. Managing to recuperate and restore a few of the ancient knicks and crannies, the apartment's eclectic mix of Tuscan antiques and Asian art makes for a comfortable place to hang one's hat while visiting this enchanting corner of the globe. The main room is composed of a well appointed kitchen alcove (the owner is a private chef and cookbook author thus you will find everything you need to create a savory Tuscan meal); a dining area that comfortably seats six; and two sofas for relaxing with a book or travel log after a day of sightseeing. Down two steps, off the kitchen alcove, is the airy, Italian tiled bathroom with its large, built-in shower stall. Next to the bathroom is a bedroom with two single twin beds and an armchair/convertible single bed. The bedroom's large window offers the same extensive views of the Tuscan countryside as that of the upstair's bedroom. A stone staircase off the dining area in the main room leads to the master bedroom. There is an antique queen size bed, a comfortable couch and a t.v. with satellite disk in this large room. A small and very private rooftop terrace, complete with bistro table and chairs, completes the upstairs. This terrace, with its extensive views is the perfect spot to watch the sun set over Tuscan's patchwork vineyards and silvery olive groves while sipping a glass of the region's renowned Chianti wine. The bi-fora (double arch window on the otherside of the room opens onto yet another picture postcard view of hilltop hamlets scattered over rolling hills and vineyards. Sunrise from this window is magical.
Guests choosing to vacation in this small hamlet midway between Florence and Siena are generally those dreaming to mingle with locals so as to experience what Tuscan life is really all about. The charming wine bar 'Canto di Baccio' in the hamlet's tiny square is the perfect spot to do just that. And for those who feel that the choice of village life means giving up an important summer creature comfort (i.e. lounging around a poolside) I am happy to say there are a few lovely country pools within a 10 minute drive from the property where, for a nominal fee, one can have a dip or relax in a comfortable lounge chair mingling with the locals. Just toss swimsuits and towels in the car before setting out for the day.
