-Varkala Town - Maithanam
The town of Varkala called Maithanam is about 2 km inland, located near to the train station, and can be reached via auto rickshaw, taxi or bus. Here you can shop with the locals and eat at the many bakeries and local restaurants.

Sivagiri Mutt the Samadhi of Kerala's saint Sree Narayana Guru is situated in Varkala town and hence has become a place of pilgrimage. A festival is held here on 31st December every year.
-Golden Island
Ponnumthuruthu Island is situated about 12 km south of Varkala. You can board a country boat from Nedunganda and take a tour through the backwaters for about 30 minutes to reach Ponnumthuruthu. Ponnumthuruthu, the name literally means Golden Island.
