We take you to Djerba to visit an architect's house, built by a young and talented Tunisian architect, Samia Ben Abdallah, for Breton clients, in love with the island of Djerba. We wanted to know the genesis of the now finalized project and we invite you to read the answers given by the architect.

We take you to Djerba to visit an architect's house, built by a young and talented Tunisian architect, Samia Ben Abdallah, for Breton clients, in love with the island of Djerba. We wanted to know the genesis of the now finalized project and we invite you to read the answers given by the architect.
How did the idea for a contemporary house in Djerba come about?
I was consulted to design a house in the pure Djerbian tradition. As the characteristics of the land did not allow for the establishment of a house with a patio, a houch, the orientation towards a compromise between a rationalist approach and traditional references was borrowed in a frank manner. Therefore, it was necessary to succeed in the challenge of transcribing and reinterpreting the aesthetics of the vernacular architecture of Djerba in a resolutely contemporary language.
Was it from the start a customer order, or just your orientation?
During our first discussions, my clients spoke of a "small traditional house". The hierarchy of spaces and their organization as well as the architectural elements of the house refer to the vernacular architecture of the island: orientation, protection against the prevailing winds, white cubic volumes, integration of a patio, a traditional well. , the relative distance of the suite of guests from the central nucleus, management of openings, balance of solids and voids… The next step was to interpret the entire volume in a contemporary manner. The blueprint was the guideline at this stage. This same concept is widely used in the architecture of the Menzels as well as places of worship on the island. The choice of vocabulary therefore seems obvious to me. Customers were won over by seeing the CGI. Their future home would enjoy all the amenities and comforts of contemporary living, while respecting tradition. The compromise was therefore blown to customers who were able to let themselves be convinced.

Tell us about your philosophy as an architect.
Formal non-determinism defines my approach. I try not to have a predetermined style, so each project is the result of a close relationship with the site, the place and its users. It is a contextual, functional and "intuitive" approach. I believe that architectural quality is the result of a long, continuous and regular process over time. The project is a dialogue between owners, consultants, companies and users. We work closely with all stakeholders to achieve the best results through the synthesis of functional, aesthetic, structural and contextual concepts.
How do you see the ethics of such a project?
My approach tries to be a response to the problem of reclaiming the Tunisian heritage as a whole, whatever the nature and origin of its genesis. Many "modernist" architects have been strongly influenced by the vernacular architecture of North Africa. My ethic lies in respect for the context, the humble integration of volumes, the simplicity of the facades, the enhancement of the landscape, the suitability of the whole with the function.

What were the specific constraints?
Access from the street, the long and narrow land, the close neighborhood, the orientation, the presence of the well, wastewater treatment in the absence of a sewer network, the question of sustainable development
What are the remarkable points of the house?
The row of accesses allows you to see the back of the garden from the entrance porch. The entrance hall is double height, making it easy to read the organization of the ground floor and 1st floor plans. The house is bathed in light thanks to a balance of full and empty. Nature is omnipresent thanks to the patios and garden paths integrated into the volume. Two garden terraces upstairs also allow you to be in contact with the earth and plants even upstairs. The dining room, the terrace and the office open onto a green patio. The integration of "green spaces" in the house allows for more openings and views, in addition to their refreshing role. By a very subtle set of heights, the living room terrace is almost always in the shade, although facing south. The Djerbien well brings its local touch. The volumes of the house are pure, inside and out.

Have you created furniture specifically for the home? Can you tell us about it?
Having designed custom furniture for this house allowed me to discover working with artisans. It's a whole world. The materials are the real stars. It is the materials that “dictate” the shapes to us. The subjects teach us the techniques of production. Design therefore stems from the combination of the design of the object and the possibilities offered by the material. It's up to the designer to get around the constraints and sublimate his ideas.
If you had to show us a space in the house, which would be your favorite and why?
The living room, dining room and parents' suite wing is definitely my favorite space. Everything has been designed around the view of the water, the swimming pool and a patio planted with a banana tree. The sequence is fluid: living room, dining room, office and parents' suite. This opens directly onto the swimming pool and the garden. We are there on one level with the outdoor terrace. The living room opens onto the swimming pool and the garden through a large bay window and through small vertical slits. The accesses leading to the fence allow contact with the garden. We invite you to admire the highly successful result of this project carried out in one year.
