Tourist settlement was build according to the plans of the architect Vlasto Kopac (1964), the cottages are built in the unique style and are in their appearance very similar to the herdsmen's cottages.

At the very beginning during the communism tourist settlement was used by the employee of the companies from Kamnik and its neighbourhood. After the independence of Slovenia (1991) more or less all cottages were sold to the individuals.

And now, after 20 years, we are trying to restart and to give cottages back to the tourists.

By cable car:
When you arrive to the city of Kamnik, follow the direction to Gornji Grad. After 2 or 3 km you will see the signs for Velika planina. In the village Stahovica there is a sign for Kamniska bistrica (cable car). You turn left and after 8 km you will arrive to the bottom station of the cable car. There is also free parking. The timetable of cable is from 9:00 till 16:00 every hour).

From the upper station of cable car take the seat lift. You step down at the first station of seat lift (near restaurant Zeleni rob). In the low season the seat lift does not operate from Monday till Thursday.

In this case you have to walk from the upper station of the cable car to the restaurant Zeleni rob (app. 35 minutes).

From the restaurant Zeleni rob you follow the sign Kamniško nasledje /na jamah. You will see on your left chalet Helios, later on your right chalet Planika, later on your left (under the road) chalet Zlatorog, you will see also chalet Encijan, Košutnik.

The last chalet on your right is chalet Pehta!

By car:
It is possible to go up by car – only in the summer, impossible in the winter. There are only two problems - the lasta parking place is Mackin kot. From Mackin kot to the chalet is not allowed to drive.

If you decide to walk from Mackin kot to the chalet, it takes 35 minutes.

How to go?

From Kamnik you follow the sign for Velika planina.
Be careful only in the village Stahovica. In the crossroad you will see the sign Kamniska bistrica - Velika planina/cable car. In this crossroad don't turn left, but you go straight forward.

Next villages are Crna, Krivicevo. If your Gps shows you to turn on your left in Krivicevo, it is wrong, so follow the main road.

When you arrive to next sign for Velika planina, you turn left. After few km you will arrive to the pass Podvolovjek and you will see again the sign for Velika planina.

You turn left and at this point starts a macadame road. Be careful after 1.8 km to turn on your right (you will see the sign Velika planina for right and left).

Parking place Mackin kot is a small place in the mountains.

And at this point you follow the signs for Zeleni rob / Simnovec.
At the restaurant Zeleni rob turn on your right. After 300 m you will arrive.

What to do?

Herdsmen’s settlement
The herdsmen’s settlement is known as one of few the settlements of such size in Europe and attracts many visitors throughout the year. It is distinct by its typical architecture which symbolises Velika planina. The roofs are covered with pine shingles, which extend rather low. The name of the cottage in the Kamnik part of Velika planina is “a herdsman hut” or “a shepher’s home”, and a pine shingle is called “šinkel”.
The settlement is revived every June, when herdsmen return to the settlement and tend to their cattle until September. They are delighted to invite you to taste their dairy products or try a typical herdsmen’s lunch; sour milk and buckwheat mush.

Snow Mary chapel
The chapel of Snow Mary, which originally stood at the same place before the Second World War, is located slightly above the herdsmen’s settlement. It was burnt down by German soldiers during the war, and was rebuilt in 1988 on the herdsmen’s initiative. It was consecrated to Snow Mary and this is why 5th of August presents a special holiday for the chapel and the entire herdsmen’s settlement. During the summer, the masses are held every Sunday and several thousands visitors attend the sacred mass or the midnight service on Christmas.

Veternica and Dovja Griča caves
Veternica cave is the most popular natural site of interest on Velika planina. It is assembled of the caves Mala Jama and Velika Veternica, which came into existence when the roof caved in as the result of rock disintegration. The cave Velika veternica is more popular. It is known for its patches of snow, which remain in the cave also during the summer.
Dovja Griča cave is located in the valley Tiha Dolina and is 9m deep. It is known for the legends which were happening near by. The cave, therefore, sheltered many good and bad characters, which were mostly invented by herdsmen themselves. The most known are the legends about wild men who lived in Dovja Griča, also known as the wild rock, as suggested in the name itself.

Preskar museum
The museum is located in the herdsmen’s settlement and is opened every day during the pasture season. It is distinguished by its appearance, since the small, grey herdsmen’s hut is located in the stone part of the settlement.

After the Second World War, Andrej Preskar built his cottage with the original oval floor plan, as it was before the war. Today, this is the only cottage which is distinct from the other cottages with its shape, size and modestly decorated interior. Among other things in the cottage, there is also an example of “trnič”- a special sort of cheese known in this area
High mountains – Konj, Korosica and Ojstrica

If you are expert in mountainhiking, I can send you also some proposal for visiting the mountains nearby (mountain Konj – 1900 m, mountain Korošica 1810 m, mountain Ojstrica 2350 m). You should visit also the vally of the river Kamniška bistrica and the springs of this river.

First of all - do not forget that Chalet Pehta is located high in the mountains (1600 M), so the appropriate equipment (hiking boots, warm cloths) is really necessary.
