Flaminio district, bordered by the blond Tiber, is located just outside the historic center, close to the Aurelian walls and is the first district of Rome. It takes its name from one of the most famous streets of imperial Rome, the consular road via Flaminia, built in 220 Bc. which starts from Porta del Popolo and arrives as far as Rimini. It was the first, and for many centuries the only, terrestrial road linking Rome and northern Italy. From Rimini it continued towards Milan as Via Emilia; from Milan the roads branch off to other European locations.
